Checking your Fork Truck for Safety
A fork truck, like any industrial equipment, must be utilized with care. Not like an automobile, a fork truck is steered from the back wheel and therefore has a different center of balance. Anybody working in the vicinity of a fork truck and anybody using this particular machinery should know workplace safety guidelines and safe operating measures.

Safe operation of a fork truck initially involves checking the truck prior to driving it. Operators should inspect for potential dangers like worn tires and fuel leaks. The lifts, forks as well as the overhead guard must be checked thoroughly. The safety handle must be used just when the forklift is being mounted.

The lights, horns and alarms should be tested to guarantee that they are operating properly. Gauges and monitors must be adjusted correctly. The seat must be adjusted and safety belt fastened prior to starting the truck.

To avoid tipping the equipment, take turns cautiously and always choose the low rate speed when driving. If the load blocks the operator's vision, the truck must be driven in reverse gear. Be aware of the location of any obstacles and pedestrians while driving.

The driver must always sit inside the cage enclosure and keep all body parts inside the vehicle so as to avoid any risk of injury. The forks should be kept several inches above the floor while driving. Never raise or lower lifts while you are driving or the truck might become unstable. Never allow anyone to walk under lift when the engines are running.

Stopping at intersections and watching for approaching traffic are basics for driving safely. It is really a good idea to sound the horn periodically and before proceeding when operating within aisles. That way, you would warn any approaching individual to your presence.
